New Zealand South Island Adventures
We operate five different scheduled trips throughout the year, as well as custom trips occasionally. If a custom trip is advertised, it is open to the public and you are welcome to join it. If you have a group of people, let us design a trip for you! The trips are named after favorite New Zealand trees and birds. We're very enthusiastic about New Zealand's natural history, and sharing that knowledge is an important part of our trips.
New Zealand Kayaking, Biking and Hiking Trips: South Island Adventure We designed the Rimu for the active and adventurous person. We spend 14 days seeing the wilder parts of New Zealand and staying well off the beaten path. We provide plenty of options, and this is absolutely the best way to see the South Island if you're looking for an alternative to tour buses and resorts. You'll need to have a reasonable degree of fitness to enjoy this trip.
For detailed itinerary click here: South Island Adventure Queenstown Rimu: For our most popular departure dates, we've added a trip that begins and ends in Queenstown instead of Christchurch. It's the same trip, but just in a different order and perfect if you have a few extra days. Have a look at the specific itineraries for the trips listed below Winter Rimu: US$ $2,999 plus tax Our most action-packed trip runs year round! From May through September, there's plenty of blue sky and we'll enjoy spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains from some lower elevations and have the national parks to ourselves! Winters down here are generally fairly mild so we'll still be able to hike, kayak and paddle just about everywhere, with a few extra layers on. We'll tailor our activities to take account of the conditions and have added some spectacular spots that we can't do in the summer when they're teeming with visitors, such as a two-night backpacking trip up to the winter wonderland & hot springs of Welcome Flat and the stunning alpine environment of Mt Aspiring Hut. Come in July, August or September for world-class skiing or snow boarding on your free day in Queenstown or a day up at a local ski field near Lake Ohau.
Our Rimu trip is not for everyone, so we run another 14-day trip for those who are interested in traveling in a (slightly) more leisurely manner, and who enjoy a higher standard of accommodation. The Manuka cuts out the first few days of the Rimu, leaving us more time to take in the sights, and includes a choice of the Milford Track Guided Walk or the Hollyford Track Guided Walk. But make no mistake – this is not a trip for couch potatoes! We do plenty of great hikes and we GUARANTEE you will not be bored!! For a detailed itinerary click here: Manuka
This trip is for adventurous, busy people who only have a week to see the best New Zealand has to offer. Fly out Friday evening from the US and we'll have you back the following Sunday. If you tried to see the entire country in that time, you'd do nothing but sit in a vehicle all day! So our philosophy is a little different to most, we minimize the driving and have an outrageously fun time in a smaller area, while staying in comfortable and interesting accommodations throughout.
Want to see the other side of New Zealand? Explore the North Island with us. We stay in some spectacular lodges, meet the people of New Zealand, check out the local Maori culture, and do some great hikes as well. This trip is a great introduction to New Zealand, and works well at the beginning or end of our South Island trips. You can add the Kauri to most of our South Island
Family: US$2,799 plus tax ; US$1,999 for age 12 and under. We’ve tweaked the Rimu, our most action-packed and popular trip, for parents traveling with their kids. It’s a multi-activity trip with lots of options – an awesome way to see New Zealand if your family enjoys the outdoors and likes a bit of a challenge. It’s suitable for active kids ages 8 and older and we have two guides to take good care of everyone and make sure neither grown-ups nor kids will be bored! Current trip dates and availability (or ask us about a custom trip): Sometimes we put together custom trips, to suit a particular interest or group. Every one of these trips is different. We sometimes run a wilderness rafting trip on the Clarence River in November. (This is the best time to raft in New Zealand, and the Clarence trip is our favorite. Not hard core whitewater, but enough to be interesting. Three days of snowcapped mountains and wilderness, following the river from source to sea.) Take a look at our schedule -- you are always welcome to join our published custom trips
